Post De Lane Lea S12 resurfaced
on: July 22, 2018, 23:04

Hi everyone! I waited to join and share posts until I bought this console. Let me start by saying that you all have seen this desk because it is on the forum banner. I used to be a WB De Lane Lea mixer. The manuals confirm this as it seems WB get there own personalised versions! I found it in pieces in a one port garage up in Aberdeen. If someone can tell me exactly how it got there I would be interested. All the cards are still in their original boxes. About 12 boxes in total. The board is just shy of 4 meters.
I had no idea just how heavy and complex the collection turned out to be. Having driven up from Dorking in Surrey in a Luton I was loath to turn back without it so the get-in took about 6 hours between 4 of us to get it all packed in. (may I suggest that a desk of this size with 4 racks etc is best handled by a professional team with more space). It was one of the hardest jobs I can remember. I nearly gave in until someone found a way to pack the bulky bits in like a puzzle!
Anyway here I am. Hello and thanks for this forum. I hope to make some new friends as I start the restoration process and hopefully upgrading the Computer system as I have seen mentioned here by Studjo.
Any advice along the way would be very helpful. I will also update with progress if anyone is interested.

For those interested in the restoration, I will upload as I have time and progress. I am totally blown away by the shear amount of 'stuff' which comes with a console of this size. It has now taken up half of my generous live room! My reverb chamber is now 'Cageville' and my hall way is filled with chassis. That said I have been taking channel sections home to look over and clean. There have been some with bent pins but all managed to straighten (phew!). Some of the side panels need restoration. Luckily I have a spray shop which can assist. So far I have figured out how this thing basically fits together. There are still some loose ends but if I can get some of the experienced users here to engage again that would be amazing!
Where the hell do I plug monitors into. Which module? I only see serial ports on the router/ monitor cage. Sorry just a bit tired today, it was 38 degC in England..See you next time.

Hi Rob and welcome here !

Wow, that is an impressive amount of stuff indeed ! :P

We've heard about this console a number of years ago, as I think the former owner posted something about it basically saying that they were replacing it with another console, and that they didn't have the space to store it, so he was almost ready to give it away. The problem with such a beast is of course its size, almost nobody has a studio big enough for such a monster, so I guess they didn't manage to sell it, and maybe even not to give it away ?

Did you get any documentation with the console ? As these were made to order, often with some custom modifications, I think you will really need the specific installation documentation that was delivered with this very console. If you don't have it, I would recommend you get in touch with Harrison in Nashville and ask them if they still have it archived. I wouldn't be surprised if they had everything you need for this one, in which case you should definitely buy it from them.

Also did you find the console completely disassembled as we can see in the pictures ? Or were the modules and cards still in their respective racks ?

I you haven't had the opportunity to label everything before it was dismantled, then it might be very hard to bring the puzzle back together, epecially if you don't have the documentation, and I'm afraid only a Harrison technician will be able to help. Or maybe you could try to find the DeLaneLea technicians that took care of the console when it was used there ?

As for your question about the monitoring, there's normally a specific rack for the monitoring system, but as your console is a movie mixing desk, it probably has the cinema monitoring matrix, which won't give you what you'd expect from the usual monitoring section of a music console. So you'll probably need to get a separate monitor controller (like an Avocet or a Grace Design M905 or whatever).

Regarding serial ports, there should be some on every element of the system. For example on my system there is a pair of connectors on the Channel's Rack (the ones where the grey channel's chassis slide in), one on the bottom of the remote control, two on the back of the monitoring rack, all forming a loop going from an to the connecting box sitting under the MacIIVx.

Did you get the cables interconnecting the system too BTW ?

In any case it's great to know that you're trying to save this beauty from the trash, I hope you will manage to make it work !

Cheers,
Maikol

Hi Maikol,
Thanks for the welcome and info. Interesting reading. I did have to pay for it unfortunately but well worth the money as this console is in fantastic condition as it turns out. The question is can I get it running as a mixing desk with Studio One as my DAW going out to the desk and then the monitoring which I don't yet know where it would connect to, Ill get to all that in phases otherwise it is overwhelming.
Brian Cox, Harrison told me that there were 2 in DeLaneLea. 1 went to Australia and the other to Turkey. Im not so sure because the one described in the original inspection document (I forget the tech's name who I can't seem to track down anyway) I found online matches this one I found in Aberdeen. When did DeLaneLea sell this and how much (curious)? How many other owners before me? Brian said he is looking for a UK tech support.

I could really do with some help on this so please bare with me as I learn some basic things on this forum.
I can barely get my head around the concept of this system and routers and so on. I roughly understand the audio cards and the router going through a MacIIXv. Unfortunately the mac seems to be dead. I have traced the issue to the power supply. I have ordered some bits if I can get this thing going again..
Are there any more modern macs I can run these NuBus's on?
As far as the monitoring card is concerned I will post what I think is the unit which sends the monitor signal. Looking at the desk I would not be surprised if it were surround. I'll come back on that if I may.
Now a newbie question regarding the power:
Can I run this system on a 13 amp circuit? I have a choice of 20 amp which I run my Krell 250 on in the mastering room. There is a lot of components to plug in. Harrison measures the required load in Watts: Total = 13775w. No idea what that means in practical terms. Any advice. How do you power yours and do you leave it all on?

So far:
I have stripped the controllers. The cages were empty and the cards were all in wrapped boxes. Looking over the controller sections, I found only 2 connectors on the rear of one eq section where the pins were badly bent. I managed to get them back without snapping! I did get the full DeLaneLea manual set thankfully. This helped get the cables connected linking the system and the 3 controller sections but the manual is written for techs who know this system already so I am on the back foot a bit but that is ok I'm keen. The controller sections were all in the wrong places and loose so I pulled the lot out but the many ribbons are marked anyway so I'll go by those and the photograph of the console in studio. The side and top panels get restored tomorrow in my workshop then once the physical aspects are cleaned and fitted as per the manual I will then look to see, with some assistance, how this was meant to operate and see what I need to do to get audio out without braking the bank. I need to source suitable ad/da converters to make use of the channels but no idea where they plug into! I am thinking - on the rear of the execution cages at each shelf is a row of DSub 25 pin plug points. I assume these are the audio card inputs? There are already ribbons linking each section so I can't think what else these open plugs are used for?
I've got to say I am more then relieved someone got back to me here as I am very unsure of what I have done by buying this thing. Craziest thing I have ever done I feel I have made a commitment to restore it and see where this takes me.
I welcome comment and guidance.
Kind regards
Rob

Progress: Successfully followed the great labelling and filled the router cage. I am slowly working through all the channels...
I had to repair the Mac power supply and now it looks like my hd is bad. That’s a worry because not sure I can repair it.
Does anyone here have a copy of the software?
Thanks

Hey Rob

this is a very interesting story and an awesome find for you! I'm pretty sure you'll get that thing working. The Harrison guys can fix everything for $$$ so that's always an option. Mind you I'm a guitar player with an oversized console so I have no real technical background but I think you're main problem will be the not working HD in the Mac IIVx. I guess you really need the software tailored to your console to have it fully working. So it doesn't help when I copy you my software. What we could do is to contact Dave Wheeler who replaced my old hard disk in the mac with a SD card! So you'd have no turning parts in your Mac anymore and can easily duplicate your SD card every few years. You'd still have my software which I think wouldn't fully work on your console. Perhaps you should ask Harrison about the software ....
Regarding Monitoring / DAW connectivity to Harry - let's sort that when you got the computer running. Because that's really key everything else is a piece of cake! Promised :D
Take care Jo

My nephew is a crack in that departement - he recovered a SSD drive for me with minimal data loss ... just in case.
